I think the true value of religion is that it is the fundamental binding agent of a group. Knowledge of the gods does not require a religion, it never did. But the religion effectively is the ultimate shared belief between men. Is it possible to even have a war band, without an agreement on spiritual matters? We may have to face the dragon, but we don't have to do it alone.
